You never could tell. I have been told that someone buried a barrel in a neighbour's field. Sadly, the neighbour decided to plough his field, burst the barrel and the oil was lost. Poetic justice?

It is a coincidence that as the ss emerald was heading for Gottenberg from new York another ship was setting sail for Sydney out of London, the 1450 ton Ben Voirlich,a wind jammer with my great grandfather,Andrew dick Luckman,on board. This was in 1879 and gives me a little Australian blood as he married out there and my grandfather was born there which gives me patrial rights. But having reached the age of discretion I think Somerset will do with visits to westray and the Cabin enough to satisfy the travel bug. I can't wait until my next visit.

Wonderful just what I needed to cheer me up the blog looks great, love the heading with the emerald sailing along. I cannot wait to find out more through your goodself about the emerald and her journey.Could hardly believe they were using petroleum way back then, that must have made a mess on the shore.

happy blogging.
sandy sent the info to me.
